Computers and Headaches.

Sunday, February 5th, 2012

When you have seen as many patients as I have in my years as a Bellevue chiropractor you begin to see patterns in the way that certain peoples body’s present. Did you know that women who wear high heels will most likely have back pain at some point in their lives? A big one that I see are people with computer jobs. Sitting at a computer all day in a poor posture with create dysfunction in the neck. Here in Bellevue WA I see many people with computer jobs, that all have the same kind of neck. I call these necks “Bellevue Necks”.

The reason that computer jobs do this to the neck is all mechanical in nature. If you wrench a structure into an unnatural position and then keep it there for long enough, its going to stay there. This is what happens to the neck and head.

In the neurological text “Principles of Neural Science” this change is called plasticity. If something bends for a period of time, the odds are strong in it getting stuck there. Thankfully plasticity can also be a positive as we can “bend” things back to where they should be with a little stimulation.

I have coined the term “Bellevue Neck” for those with straight necks or a loss of neck curve. A lost curve in the neck can cause headaches, neck pain, middle back pain, and even low back pain if it is a bad enough case.

I work with patients on a daily basis who’s neck pain, mid back pain, headaches, tmj, and so on, are due to their “Bellevue Neck”. The key is to reverse the damages done and then prevent them from happening again. Chiropractic care is the best suited form of treatment for cases of Bellevue neck, and specific exercises are important to keep your spine in place.

Some Facts About Physiotherapy (Physical Therapy)

Wednesday, September 14th, 2011

Physiotherapy, or physical therapy, is a method of treatment that doctors prescribe to patients whose bodies have been damaged by injuries or disease. A patient would be prescribed a certain amount of times they should visit with the therapist. The therapist will give the patient instructions on how to properly do the techniques and what they can do at home to help them recover.

Many times, this therapy is prescribed for the patients who have been bedridden, are in a coma or must use a wheelchair. Coma patients are special cases that require therapists who are qualified to handle that kind of care. The patient cannot participate in the therapy, making it more difficult for the therapist.

The point of having this kind of therapy is to keep muscles as strong as possible, maintaining flexibility and suppleness. If the muscles are allowed to atrophy from not being used, it will take longer to get any kind of strength and health back to them. The patient will experience severe loss of mobility and movement.

Therapists will manipulate the arms, legs, and torso to help the patient stay limber. Patients can sometimes help themselves, especially if they have recovered from the disease or injury and just need to learn to manipulate their own limbs again. The body can be kept flexible but it cannot stay strong unless the muscles are used consistently. Sitting in a wheelchair or laying in a bed will make them very weak.

A physical therapist must be a strong individual, someone with enough of their own physical strength to manipulate and move sometimes very large patients. They must have the mental stamina to work with patients who might not be in the highest of spirits. Very often, people who have physical disabilities, especially if the disability is new to the patient, will become very depressed, anxious, stressed and angry.

Anyone working with these patients must maintain an encouraging and positive attitude. Patients do not want to be patronized or made to feel like a child. They need encouragement and understanding. Therapists should use positive methods to motivate a person in this situation.

Whenever a doctor prescribes physical therapy for a patient, the schedule set forth by that doctor should be followed. Skipping appointments for this can cause delays and sometimes even setbacks. The work can be hard and frustrating, which is why doctors and therapists must be encouraging whenever they can.

Physiotherapy should be accompanied by some kind of mental counseling whenever it looks like the patient might be taking their situation very hard, emotionally. The doctor in charge will understand the patient well enough to know whether this kind of step is warranted. It is always good to err on the side of caution. There is a good chance that depression and stress over a bad situation can cause someone to break down mentally and become suicidal. It is best to work to prevent this kind of thing well ahead of time.

Will You Fail To See This? The Source Of Arm Pain Discovered!

Monday, December 14th, 2009

Arm pain can be very agonizing, amid numerous sets of tender to excruciating conditions (100), increasingly resulting in permanent joint injury, malformation and loss of flexability. Inflammation of extremity joints is characteristic of the disorder. Chronic pain, disability and death are unfortunate results.

Joint inflammation has an predictable incidence of 1 to 2%. Prevalence increases with age, approaching 5% in women over age 55. The average annual incidence in the United States is about 70 per 100,000 annually. Rheumatoid arthritis occurs two to three times more in women than in men. Although rheumatoid arthritis may present at any age, patients most commonly are first affected in the third to sixth decades.

Joint inflammation, collectively affect nearly 46 million adults and 300,000 children in the U.S. It is not selective. The imbalance can be developed by anyone. Every joint inflammatory condition affects the musculoskeletal structures and particularly the joints – wherever two or more bones meet.

Joint inflammation problems include:

  • pain
  • stiffness
  • inflammation
  • damage to joint cartilage (the tough, smooth tissue that covers the ends of the bones, enabling them to glide against one another) and surrounding structures.

In these conditions, joint inflammation can cause damage to virtually any bodily organ or system, including the heart, lungs, kidneys, blood vessels and skin. Pain-related conditions primarily affect the muscles and the bones.

Joint inflammation and related conditions are a major cause of disability in the U.S, costing more than $124 billion per year such as:

  • lost wages
  • production
  • millions of people lose their health, physical abilities and independence.
  • growing toll on on the health system as people age
  • reduced coverage by employer’s insurance

Arm Joint Inflammation - Underlying Cause & Relief

With graduating arm joint inflammation conditions, the majority of cases (90%) will be seen with cold sensations at the site of pain. 10% of cases are seen with hot to touch joints and related tissues. The primary appraoch in Chinese medicine is to counter the hot condition with cold methods to achieve a neutral state. This neutral zone relieves and corrects the tissues surrounding blockage in the channels. The opposite is true for cold conditions. Heat in the form of traditional Chinese herbs will alter the joint environment by establishing neutrality. Improved circulation and energy results in progressively removing toxicity (unflitered blood, de-oxygenated blood, unnatural tissue). The obstruction may be subtle to extreme in density but in all cases, to remove the barrier, herbal formulation needs to counter the underlying condition before the impediment can move on. Furthermore, nutritional advice should align with similar logic relative to enhancing remediation.

Additional attention needs to be given to the general emotional state that may indirectly support the blockage. Particularly, the irrational beliefs that contribute to the person remaining in stressful states rather than relaxing as needed for recovery.Individuals focussed on their health understand their boundaries and support a restorative lifestyle.

Don’t Be Left Out! There Are Joint Pain Answers!

JOINT INFLAMMATION is a very painful, with multiple sets of conditions (100), progressively leading to joint damage, deformity and loss of mobility. Swelling of extremity joints is the hallmark of the syndrome. Chronic pain, disability and death are unfortunate results.

Joint inflammation has an estimated prevalence of 1 to 2%.

The condition can happen to anyone. All arthritic conditions impact the musculoskeletal system and specifically the joints – where two or more bones meet.

Joint inflammation problems include:

  • pain
  • stiffness
  • damage to joint cartilage (the tough, smooth tissue that covers the ends of the bones, enabling them to glide against one another) and surrounding structures.

HOW DO WE GET JOINT INFLAMMATION?

This condition involves obstruction of the blood due to hot-damp, drying and/or drying characteristics. The condition includes:

  • cold or hot and painful joints
  • difficulty in flexing and extending the joints
  • aversion to cold or hot with attraction to the opposite condition
  • In some cases the limbs and joints will be aching, numb, painful
  • overall physical body feels heavy.
  • tongue is pale or the opposite

There are graduating arthritic conditions where the site of pain and deformity are more intense, with heat or cold predominating, however, the primary appraoch is to get the obstruction to move. This is done by changing the internal environment by opposing the wind-cold/hot-damp/dry and altering any external conditions contributing to the obstructions. Just as important is the consideration of psycho-spiritual conflicts and their influence on channel blockage.

HOW DO WE GET BETTER?

JOINT INFLAMMATION: FOOD THERAPY  & HERBAL HERBS

“We are what we eat.” Most of us would agree that most conditions of imbalance are determined by what we put in our mouth. We unkowingly create imbalances by not being aware of how critical this area is, especially in the latter years. If we are choose foods and supplements which worsen our condition then it would serve us well to become very aware of our body type and foods which enhance balance. Below, you can begin to choose foods that deliver balance for this obstructive condition:

Foods That Benefit & Foods To Avoid

Foods to Counter Joint Pain: Asparagus, Cabbage (poultice & ingestion), Celery, Cod, Cherry, Chives, Extra Virgin Olive Oil, Garlic, Ginger, Goats milk, Grape, Kelp, Oranges, Papaya, Pineapple (Bromelain), Pumpkin Seeds, Royal Jelly, Scallions, Sesame oll, Spelt, Spirulina, Soy products, Strawberry, Sprouts (mung, red clover, radish, mustard, lentil, adzuki, garbanzo, pumpkin seeds, sunflower seeds), Tumeric, Water melon, Barley products, Wheat grass products, Alfalfa products (tablets, tea), Chlorophyll foods, Almonds (5-6 dy.),

HERB FORMULAS FOR PAIN   Formulas are created and rendered, taking into consideration, a person’s constitution, environment, life energy (qi), lifestyle and emotional status to name a few concerns. Traditional Chinese Herbs and medicine focuses on bringing all these areas into balance. The primary element is to make an herbal composition with specific emphasis on painful joints while correcting the underlying condition in the body without creating more physical problems.

Additionally, the quality of the herbs are not the same. If lesser quality is contained in a formula then the results will not hold up as indicated in research findings. While it may sound impressive to make marketing statements that a formula containing an herb is beneficial it is not enough. The quality of herb is utmost. Ginseng alone has more than 6 grades and each level provides a different result. Quality, alone, can determine whether the formula works or not. An adept master herbologist will always remain loyal to providing the right formulation while many corporate herb manufacturing firms are persuaded by profit when serving their distributers, wholesalers, retailers and customers. The continuation of this American practice engenders herbology and products with a disreputable name. Employing herbal deficiency practices will gradually wear away customer trust so when true herbologists offer their services the challenge for customers to believe in our craft is hard.

JOINT INFLAMMATION takes time to develop and when the underlying cause is acknowleged then its possible to resolve rapidly. According to Traditional Chinese herbs and medicine, the primary problem underlying arthritis is obstruction with painful results. To varying degrees, liver and kidney depletion coupled with energy deficiency will result in exhaustion.
